Tune in as Dr. Daniela Crousillat presents an MFM Fellow Lecture: Two Beating Hearts: The Multidisciplinary Management of High-Risk Cardiac Pregnancies.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of maternal mortality and articulate the role of multidisciplinary cardio-obstetrics teams in improving outcomes.
- Apply the modified World Health Organization (mWHO) risk classification to stratify maternal risk and guide counseling, referral, and site-of-care decisions.
- Identify appropriate surveillance and monitoring strategies during pregnancy based on cardiac diagnosis and risk profile.
- Develop a coordinated labor, delivery, and postpartum care plan incorporating timing, mode, delivery location, and transition to long-term cardiovascular care.

Tune in as Dr. Hoppe presents MFM Fellow Lecture: Opportunities for Improving Hypertension in Pregnancy Care: Aspirin and Remote Patient Monitoring.
Description
Tune in as Dr. Hoppe presents MFM Fellow Lecture: Opportunities for Improving Hypertension in Pregnancy Care: Aspirin and Remote Patient Monitoring. This presentation will review current evidence and best practices for optimizing hypertension care during pregnancy, with a focus on aspirin use for preeclampsia prevention, risk stratification strategies, and the integration of remote patient monitoring (RPM) into clinical workflows. Practical implementation approaches and team‑based care strategies will also be discussed to support clinicians in improving maternal cardiovascular outcomes.
Live on February 4, 2026. The recording will be available after the live event.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Review the evidence and safety profile of aspirin for preeclampsia prevention in pregnancy and describe current clinical recommendations.
- Identify key maternal risk factors for hypertension in pregnancy and apply risk stratification frameworks to clinical scenarios.
- Evaluate the evidence supporting remote patient monitoring for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and outline how to incorporate RPM into practice.
- Provide resources to aid in developing at least one implementation strategy to increase appropriate aspirin use for preeclampsia prevention within their clinical setting.
- Describe team based care models and apply at least one collaborative approach to improve hypertension management during pregnancy.

Dr. Melissa Spiel is joined by Dr. Andrew Combs, former Chair of the SMFM Patient Safety and Quality Committee and one of the authors of the SMFM Cardiovascular Symptom Checklist, to discuss a concise, one-page tool designed to guide systematic triage of cardiovascular symptoms in pregnant and postpartum patients.
Description
In this episode of the SMFM Podcast, we launch a three-part series in recognition of American Heart Month focused on Patient Safety and Quality (PSQI) tools that support standardized, evidence-based cardiovascular care across pregnancy and the postpartum period.
The conversation highlights how structured symptom assessment can help distinguish physiologic findings from those warranting further evaluation, reduce missed diagnoses, and promote consistency across care settings.
A link to the checklist can be found below and is available on the SMFM website under Clinical Guidance → Patient Safety and Quality.

Tune in as Dr. Joshua Nitsche presents Fellow "Bootcamp" Part 4: Hands-on Ultrasound Guidance Training
During part four of the MFM Fellow Bootcamp, Dr. Joshua Nitsche will introduce the basic psychomotor skills needed to perform ultrasound guided procedures, such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling, safely and successfully
During this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Describe how the relationship between the probe orientation and needle insertion site during an ultrasound guided invasive procedure influences how and where the needle will appear on the ultrasound screen.
- Demonstrate how to select a needle insertion site, locate the needle after insertion, and purposefully guide the needle toward the intended target on a homemade task trainer.
- Practice the core guidance skills common to all ultrasound guided procedures using novel targeting tasks
Dr. Nitsche will cover foundational skills required for all ultrasound guided invasive procedures. This will be a hands-on simulation session where participants follow along with Dr. Nitsche as he demonstrates these skills virtually. This session requires that a homemade task trainer, made for readily available materials, be constructed at least 2 weeks beforehand.
To participate in the simulation it will require you to purchase some materials and build a small model. Step-by-step instructions can be found below:
