Aleha Aziz and Alex Friedman as they discuss the findings from their study on racial disparities during postpartum readmissions in an interview by SMFM education committee member, Dr. John Byrne. The investigators from Columbia University Medical Center describe the analysis of 11.3 million birth records from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database and identify the increased risk for postpartum readmissions and adverse maternal outcomes in black women when compared with other races. This is an area that warrants immediate attention as part of the nationwide effort to address worrisome maternal mortality and morbidity rates in the United States.
